Learning support and coaching

SSHE’s Learning Development Approach

SSHE applies a holistic coaching philosophy to supporting student’s learning development. We will focus on building the basic learning skills through one-on-one coaching, workshops, and peer to peer mentoring. Learning development coaching is available on request. The first objective will be to identify where you are today, and where you want to be. Topics in which you might receive specific support are:

Academic writing – whether English is your first, second or third language, you will probably find some academic writing difficult. Good academic writing should involve reading, thinking, referencing, and planning before going on to draft, redraft and final editing. We will take you through this process by using examples of good practice.

Study skills – A variety of skills and strategies are needed to study effectively and efficiently. Some of the topics that might be covered in this section are:

• Goal setting and time management
• Critical analysis
• Exam preparation
• Anxiety and stress management
• Different learning styles
• Note taking

Learning difficulties – SSHE encourages applicants and students to inform us as early as possible about any learning difficulties support that they might need or concerns they might have. All support that will be organized by SSHE is done entirely on confidential basis and stays between the academic counsellor/examinators and the student. Types of additional support measures might include:

• Additional time for formal examinations (25% extra time)
• Oral examinations to supplement written examinations and to enable the student to clarify written work
• A reader during an exam who will read aloud the examination paper and questions
• Extra coaching sessions with the designated faculty member
• Intensive support of academic counsellor
