There are two possibilities for the student to rent a place in Switzerland: a room, so called co-location (when you share a space with somebody) and apartment rent (only you).

As a student, it’s much easier to rent a room, due to the fact, that usually you will not need a guarantor, who needs to be a Swiss resident and have a certain amount of monthly salary to cover your rent costs. That’s why, many students are looking specifically for rooms or the whole apartment, that they will share with somebody and are not subject to such regulations.

When renting a whole place for yourself, besides having a Swiss guarantor, your profile will be also a subject to more detailed review. It’s connected to the fact, that Swiss law strongly protects the tenant from any violations from landlords, so the last have to be sure, that the person is eligible and capable to pay.

Before moving to the new apartment/room, a person must validate etat de lieu (state of place). It’s a document, that is designed to check and confirm condition of the living space before tenant moves in. That’s how you can insure yourself from any damages, that were made prior and free yourself from any responsibility of compensation to landlord after your rent contract is over.

Pricewise, renting a room is approximately 700-1000 CHF.- per month, however, different Canton have various rates. As for the apartment, you should expect a monthly charge of no less than 1 300 CHF. – monthly. Plus, be ready for additional costs, such as deposits and property insurance.
